REPUBLIC ACT No. 1243

An Act Providing for the Tenure of Office of Hospital Residents in Government Training Hospitals Under the Department of Health

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Philippine Congress Assembled:

Section 1. Physicians appointed for hospital residency other than senior residency in any training hospital under the Department of Health must be duly licensed physicians who have graduated from recognized medical schools.1awp++i1 They shall be appointed for a period of one year, renewable every year, in the discretion of the Secretary of Health: Provided, However, That the total duration of their appointments shall not exceed a period of three years: Provided, further, That in the computation of the three-year period, the period of time during which the appointee may have served as resident in any clinical department or section of any government training hospital shall be included: Provided, lastly, That this three-year limitation shall apply only to all appointments for residency hereinafter made.

Section 2. For the purpose of this Act, the term "hospital residency" shall embrace such employment requiring the use of the art, knowledge and science of medicine in such fields as surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, eye, ear, nose and throat, pathology and allied laboratory work, radiology and anesthesiology.

Section 3. The provisions of section one of this Act shall not apply to physicians falling under the Voluntary Group or those physicians serving in government hospitals without compensation.

Section 4. The Secretary of Health is authorized under this Act to designate the medical training hospitals under his Department.

Section 5. All acts or parts of acts inconsistent with the provisions hereof are hereby repealed.

Section 6. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
