[ Proclamation No. 99, April 16, 1999 ]

DECLARING APRIL 17, 1999 AND EVERY YEAR THEREAFTER AS “FILIPINO-CHINESE FREEDOM FIGHTERS DAY”

WHEREAS, the Confederation of Filipino-Chinese Veterans Descendants, Inc., is committed to the perpetuation of the memory of patriotic Filipino-Chinese guerillas in many parts of the Philippines who fought for freedom and democracy during World War II;

WHEREAS, the late Consul General Kwangson Young inspired the Filipino-Chinese to resist at all costs Japanese aggression and oppression and to organize themselves into guerilla forces in concert with Philippine-American resistance groups;

WHEREAS, the brutal death of Consul General Kwangson Young and other Filipino-Chinese guerillas on April 17, 1942 deserves to be commemorated as a reminder of love for freedom and democracy.

NOW, THEREFORE, I JOSEPH EJERCITO ESTRADA, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare April 17, 1999 and every year thereafter as “Filipino-Chinese Freedom Fighters Day”.
