[ Proclamation No. 136, July 5, 1999 ]

DECLARING THE YEAR 2000 AS THE PHILIPPINE YEAR FOR THE CULTURE OF PEACE

WHEREAS, the United Nations Resolution 52/15 proclaims the year 2000 as the International Year for the Culture of Peace;

WHEREAS, the Philippines, sharing this vision for a peaceful world, is one of the Member States which has adopted the resolution;

WHEREAS, the Philippines, through the UNESCO National Commission, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) has, through the years, worked to generate and promote public awareness, commitment and action in support of the culture of peace as a keystone for national development;

WHEREAS, the Philippines has staunchly supported the UNESCO Culture of Peace Programme through activities of the Department of Foreign Affairs, the OPAPP, and the education, sciences, culture and communication Committees of the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines; and

WHEREAS, there is a need to sustain and nurture the gains of the Philippine Peace Process, especially in a nation of diverse cultures and beliefs, by adopting positive measures to protect and value the nations efforts towards a culture of peace.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH EJERCITO ESTRADA, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the year 2000 as the Philippine Year for the Culture of Peace.
