[ Proclamation No. 47, November 4, 1998 ]

DECLARING THE SECOND SATURDAY OF NOVEMBER OF EVERY YEAR A NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING FOR NATIONAL STRENGTH AND UNITY AGAINST ALL ADVERSITIES

WHEREAS, the Asian economic crisis has gravely affected the lives of our people, especially the underprivileged;

WHEREAS, the social and economic devastation caused by the El Niņo phenomenon, especially in Mindanao, is now being aggravated by La Niņa;

WHEREAS, the rash of kidnappings has caused hardships on victims and their families, as well as discouraged the continuous inflow of investments into the country;

WHEREAS, amidst these serious economic difficulties and social problems, there is clearly an acute need to unify the people and to rally them for the causes of our country;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH EJERCITO ESTRADA, President of the Republic of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare November 14, 1998, and every second Saturday of November thereafter, as a National Day of Prayer and Fasting for National Strength and Unity Against All Adversities.1aшphi1

All our people are requested to fast and to observe, in the company of their loved ones, in their churches and in their homes, a few moments of prayer, for peace, for continuing strength in the midst of adversities, and for the alleviation of the plight of those who have suffered due to the natural and man-made calamities now afflicting the world.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the Philippines to be affixed.
