DECLARING FERNANDO AMORSOLO A NATIONAL ARTIST

WHEREAS, art is an expression of the national genius;

WHEREAS, artists should be given the appropriate honors for their contribution to the heritage of our society;

WHEREAS, it is necessary that we create a category to be known as National Artist which will be the national expression of gratitude and appreciation; and

WHEREAS, the paintings of Fernando Amorsolo in all his years of creative activity have defined and perpetuated a distinct element of the Nation’s artistic and cultural heritage and won universal acclaim for our country and people;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, and upon recommendation of the Board of Trustees of the Cultural Center of the Philippines do hereby create the category of Award and Decoration of National Artist henceforth to be awarded to Filipinos who have made distinct contributions to arts and letters, and do hereby declare Fernando Amorsolo a National Artist.
